How it works

The sum behind the number

Every figure is whole pence, and the fee comes from the published seller fee rules for UK sellers.
  • Start with the sold price

Take off the platform fee, any postage you paid, what you paid for the item and other costs such as packaging.

  • That is your real profit

Postage the buyer paid covers the label, so it does not reduce your profit. Free postage you offered does.

  • Margin and return on cost

Margin is profit as a share of the sold price. Return on cost is profit as a share of what you paid.

FAQ

Common questions

  • Profit is the sold price, minus the platform fee, minus any postage you paid, minus what you paid for the item, minus any other costs such as packaging.

If the buyer paid the postage, it covers the label and does not reduce your profit.

  • Vinted charges private sellers no selling fee. Buyers pay a Buyer Protection fee on top of the item price.

No selling fee for UK private sellers on listings created since 20 March 2024. Depop Payments processing is 2.9% + 30p per sale (3.3% + 45c is the US rate). Boosted listings cost extra.

eBay UK private sellers pay no final value fee since April 2024 (buyers pay a Buyer Protection fee). Promoted listings and optional upgrades still cost extra.

eBay UK business sellers: 12.25% final value fee on the order total including postage, plus 40p per order (30p when the order total is £10 or less). Category rates vary and VAT is added. Check your eBay invoice.

  • Profit margin is your profit as a share of the sold price. Return on cost is your profit as a share of what you paid for the item.

For example, an item bought for £5 and sold for £20 with no other costs makes £15. That is a 75% margin and a 300% return on cost.

  • Not usually. If the buyer pays for postage, it covers the label, so it does not come off your profit. If you offer free postage, the amount you paid is taken off.

The exception is an eBay business seller account, where the fee is charged on the postage the buyer paid as well as the price.

  • They are estimates from the published seller fee rules for UK sellers. Category rates, promoted listings, VAT and card reader charges can change the real figure, so check your own statements. This calculator is for record keeping, not tax advice.

Next: will a platform report your sales?

Platforms report sellers who reach 30 sales or about £1,700 (€2,000) in a calendar year. Check where you stand.
